AMES, Iowa- Five of Iowa State's finest track and field athletes will make their way 30 minutes south to Drake Stadium as Des Moines plays host to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 11-14.
It has been over a decade since the Cyclones have had a national title winner but this year could change the record books as Fort Dodge native Lisa Koll is a possible front-runner in the 10,000-meter run scheduled for 8:10 p.m. on Thursday. ISU's 2008 Female Athlete of the Year has had a break out track season highlighted by her performance at the Stanford Relays where she broke the American Collegiate record in the event with a 32:11.13 effort. Going into the race, Koll holds the fastest time and needs only to secure a finish in the top 12 to guarantee her All-American honors for the fifth time. Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels expects great things out of Koll this week.
“I am excited for her to have the opportunity to run this week,” said Ihmels. “She has had a terrific year and she is very deserving. I think she is going to do tremendous things at this meet.”
Koll's teammate Grace Kemmey will join her in the 10,000-meter race on Wednesday. Kemmey, a cross country All-American last fall, currently holds the 16th-fastest time in the nation. Just 20 seconds separates her from a top 10 time.
“Grace has had a tremendous year this year that has been overshadowed a little bit,” said Ihmels. “She was a cross country all-American and I think she has a great chance at earning those same honors for track this week.”
Iowan Tiffanie Synacek punched her ticket into the national meet May 31 in Lincoln, Neb. with a career best vertical leap of 5-9 ? at the regional meet in Lincoln, Neb. That effort surpassed her former best of 5-8 3/4. The Council Bluffs native will look to up her career-best mark once again with the goal of earning All-American status in her opening collegiate season. The freshman is scheduled to compete on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Koll will not be the only Cyclone contending for a national title. ISU men's steeplechaser Hillary Bor has the field's 11th-best time but is less than 16 seconds from the leader's best effort. Bor rolled to a second-place finish at the NCAA regional meet in Lincoln, Neb. on May 31, and shattered his career-best mark in the event with a time of 8:43.17. Qualifying in the 3,000-meter steeplechase will begin at 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Ihmels is proud of the strides Bor has taken this season.
“Im thrilled to see Hillary run in the steeplechase,” said Ihmels. “He started out the season a little slow but in the past few weeks his performances have improved greatly. I think Hillary is prepared to run at a high level this weekend.”
Junior James Galvan is scheduled to compete in the 800-meter run on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. Iowa State's indoor 800-meter record holder will have his hands full competing against many of the worlds best runners. Galvan's fastest time of 1:48.11 this season qualified him with the 11th fastest clocking in the country.
“I am excited that James has the chance to compete for all-American honors,” said sprints and hurdles coach Ronnie Williams. “We have worked hard all season long for this opportunity and I am anxious to see how well he competes when he is among the nation's best.”
The NCAA outdoor championships are scheduled to kickoff Wednesday morning and conclude Saturday evening. Complete results will be posted on cyclones.com following each day's events.
