2008-09 Season Outlook:
The Iowa State women's golf team took another major step forward in Christie Martens' fourth season as head coach in 2007-08. The Cyclones recorded four top-four placings, including two runner-up finishes, and achieved a top-30 rating by Golfweek, the highest ranking in over a decade.
By season's end, ISU was on the brink of making its first NCAA postseason appearance since 1996. However, a ninth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships hindered their hopes, narrowly missing out on a NCAA Regional bid.
Last season's disappointment will be a motivational factor for the 2008-09 squad, where Martens returns a loaded and even hungrier team. Three of the top-five scorers are back as underclassmen and Martens was again successful on the recruiting front by adding a number of freshmen who are ready to make their mark as Cyclones.
“Our players sense what it was like to be that close and be the team that was not able to go,” Martens said. “Hopefully that will motivate them to work even harder this season and not let strokes slip away and fight for every shot.”
ISU will have to find a way to replace the steady play of Kendra Hanson and Karly Pinder, who were staples in the Cyclone lineup for four seasons. The pair both rank in the school's top-10 for career rounds played.
Despite the loss of Hanson and Pinder, Martens can rely on three underclassmen who are on the verge of setting their own marks as Cyclones in junior Pennapa Pulsawath and sophomores Laurence Herman and Victoria Stefansen.
Pulsawath, a native of Bangkok, Thailand, recorded one of the best single-seasons in Cyclone history last year, tallying four top-five finishes. Her 76.5 stroke average was the second-best single-season total in school history.
Pulsawath continued her stellar play after the season where she arguably had the most productive summer for a Cyclone in school history. She made the match-play portion of both the U.S. Women's Amateur and U.S. Women's Public Links Amateur and advanced in a U.S. Open sectional qualifier. She also won the 2008 Iowa Amateur title. Martens feels the sky is the limit for her talented junior.
“She just loves golf and she works hard at it everyday,” Martens said. “She wants to play in the LPGA someday and she wants to be an ambassador for Iowa State. I think if she keeps working hard there are no limitations for her. She already has a great overall game and she is willing to put in the extra effort to get even better.”
Martens was extremely pleased with play of Herman as a true freshman a year ago. A native of Kortrijk, Belgium, Herman was second on the team in stroke average (78.21) and had three top-10 finishes, including a runner-up showing at the Lady Badger Invitational.
Stefansen, who hails from Roervig, Denmark, is ready to improve upon her rookie campaign as well. Stefansen, who posted an 82.59 stroke average, was not eligible until second semester, but played in all six spring events.
“Victoria is ready to improve her game and be a force for us this season,” Martens said. “Laurence had a wrist injury during the summer which kept her from playing in a lot of tournaments. She is making a nice recovery. She will be back in the lineup and be able to play and contribute for us.”
The rest of ISU's lineup will be filled out by sophomores Rachel Reed (Peoria, Ill.) and Brittany Atterbury (Rockton, Ill.) and a group of highly-touted newcomers. The main targets are freshmen Marincke Gerbranda (Eindhoven, Netherlands), Kristin Paulson (Ottumwa, Iowa) and Katie Suckow (Waukee, Iowa).
“Our freshman coming in have a lot of experience,” Martens said. “It is hard to fill the roles of seniors, but I think they have the talent and ability to be able to step in and play right away. Hopefully with the improved play of the upperclassmen, we will be able to bridge that gap.”
“Kristin (Paulson) is a very consistent player,” Martens said. “With her athleticism she will be able to step into the lineup. She is a real fighter on the golf course and is mentally tough. I am looking for her to make a contribution right away.”
