AMES, Iowa? The difference between the Iowa State soccer team and No. 14 Texas A&M was a 55th minute penalty as the Aggies topped the Cyclones 1-0 Friday evening at the ISU soccer Complex.
After the Cyclones' gameplan was proving successful in the opening 54 minutes, Texas A&M (10-4-1; 4-1-1 Big 12) forward Katie Hamilton got behind the ISU defense and was fouled in the penalty area. Fellow Aggie Rachel Shipley struck a successful penalty kick, her third goal of the season, at the 54:08 mark, scoring the decisive tally.
“Our back got beat on an unfortunate mistake and was just a step late,” Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “We made one mistake the whole game and they capitalized. I thought we did a great job on defense. Texas A&M didn't score in the run of play, and we nullified a lot of their dangerous opportunities.”
Iowa State (6-6-4; 1-5-0 Big 12) tried in vain to find the equalizer but the Aggie defense thwarted everything the Cyclones threw at them.
“Towards the end of the game we started to get players forward and get numbers in the box,” Dillinger said.
For the match, Texas A&M held a 28-8 shots advantage and a 9-3 corner kick edge.
Cyclone goalkeeper Ann Gleason played the full 90 minutes and registered a career-high-tying 12 saves. Gleason's season record moved to 6-6-4.
“Ann did a great job and made some fine saves,” Dillinger said.
At the half the two teams were knotted at 0-0. Arguably, the most exciting moment in the opening period came at the 19:10 mark when Cyclone defender Emily Hejlik saved an attempted Texas A&M shot just before it crossed the goal line.
Iowa State returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. against Texas at the ISU Soccer Complex. The match will serve as senior day, honoring the seven graduating Cyclones.
