AMES, Iowa- Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson announced Tuesday the signing of four Cyclones for the 2010-11 campaign.
“I am very pleased with the four young ladies that we signed,” Sorenson said. “They all have huge upsides, they all come from winning programs and have all had tremendous success in high school and club swimming.”
The Cyclones picked up two CIML signees in Emily Wiltsie and Alex Gustafson. Wiltsie was a member of the 2009 state championship team in Mason City. Wiltsie collected three state titles in her Mohawk career, including one in the 200 medley relay in November.
“We are very excited to have Emily, a state champion both individually and with her team,” Sorenson said. “She is a great racer and she is more suited for the college order of events with the longer races.”
Gustafson has put up seven top-eight finishes at the last two Iowa high school championships while swimming for Waukee High School/ She also put together a big meet at the 2009 ISI Long Course State Championships, picking up four victories.
“Alex had a breakthrough summer at the Iowa Senior Championships,” Sorenson said. “The times she had there matched the times some of our current swimmers had during the summer. She has a bright future at Iowa State.”
Also joining the class is Hayley Krzeczowski. The St. Charles, Ill. native just helped lead her St. Charles East Saints to a sectional victory and a 12th-place finish in the IHSA Girls Swimming and Diving Championships a weekend ago.
“Hayley is very strong and has a great feel for the water,” Sorenson said. “I think she is going to be a great sprinter for us and her butterfly will also contribute.”
The final member of the class is Katie Vollhaber. The Mounds View, Minn. native competed in 16 events at the MSHSL State Championships during her four years as a member of the Mounds View Mustangs swim team. Vollhaber elected to take her senior season off from high school swimming.
“Katie is very new to the sport but has a great feel for the water,” Sorenson said, “She took the high school season off to train with her club coach Dave Benz. I have known Dave for over 30 years and when she comes here, she will be prepared to swim fast.”
