AMES, Iowa- Iowa State's swimming and diving team travels to Lawrence, Kan. for its final dual meet of the season. The two-day meet begins Friday at 6 p.m. at Robinson Natatorium with Saturday's competition beginning at 10 a.m.
The Kansas-Iowa State series is unique in that the squads race mostly in events not competed in during the regular season, such as the 50-yard breaststroke and 800-yard freestyle.

“We are both going through a period in which training is more important than the actual meet,” said head coach Duane Sorenson. “We came up with this off-distance race format so that they will compete over worrying about their final time. Swimming Friday night at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. is the same time that finals and prelims are at Big 12's.”
ISU junior Frances Calzada also faces her toughest test of the season in the sprint freestyle events when she faces the Kansas sprinters, led by senior Maria Mayrovich. Mayrovich collected Big 12 Swimmer of the Week honors for her efforts in mid-January dual meets against Nebraska, Arkansas, South Dakota and Northern Iowa.
“Maria is an outstanding athlete,” said Sorenson. “Frances is going to have to be on top of her game if she wants to have a shot at Maria. It should be an interesting race for Frances and we will see where her strengths and weaknesses are so we can get her ready for the Big 12 Championships.”
The Iowa State divers also face stiff competition in way of the Jayhawks as well. The Kansas divers have been led by sophomore Erin Mertz, who has posted the team's top score in all three diving categories. The Jayhawks also have added depth with senior Hannah McMacken and junior Meghan Proehl. Iowa State junior Tien Tran will face one of her tougher challenges of the season but diving coach Jeff Warrick believes this will benefit her and the rest of the Cyclone divers.
“Kansas is pretty deep in divers,” said Warrick. “She needs that competition week in and week out. It's going to be even tougher at the conference championships so we want to see how she reacts to the competition.”
