Progress Made at Hilltop Invite

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa ? The Iowa State throwers made some major strides for the Cyclones Saturday at the Hilltop Invitational. While no Cyclones earned championship honors, the team demonstrated improvement.

Mike Zika (51-11), Zack Richards (51-7 ?) and Josh Ster (46-2 ?) put up personal bests in the weight throw, finishing second, third and sixth respectively. Senior Robbie Utterback finished fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 51-6 1/2. ISU freshman Dan Newhouse improved his mark in the weight throw to place eighth in 46-1 1/4.

In women's competition, Sugar Grove, Ill. native and Cyclone Brinn Melody placed third in the pole vault. The freshman cleared 9-11 3/4.

Sophomores Lillian Sawhill (45-10 ?) and Whitney Jacobs (43-3 ?) placed sixth and ninth in the weight throw, respectively.

The Cyclones will play host to the ISU Classic Thursday through Saturday on the Lied Center Harry Hoak Track. The squad is looking to use the meet as preparation for the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb. 27-28 in College Station, Texas.
