“We had some guys step up and keep us in the hunt,” Iowa State head coach Cael Sanderson said. “Jon Reader has put himself in a position to accomplish some big things. (Zabriskie) has won the close ones but part of the reason is that he is aggressive and working to position himself for scores. (Varner) has been steady and strong.”
Short-time was once again “go-time” for Zabriskie. With five seconds showing on the clock in the third period against ninth-seed John Wise of Illinois, Zabriskie pulled the much larger heavyweight back onto the mat and wrapped his arms around both legs to secure the deciding takedown. Zabriskie handed Wise a 3-2 decision as Zabriskie earns his latest All-America honor.
“(Wise) had gotten in pretty deep on my leg,” Zabriskie sad. “I was just trying to keep his head down and I was able to come around him on the edge of the mat.
Reader punched his ticket to the semifinals by beating upstart Ryan Patrovich of Hoftra, 5-2. Reader used a takedown, reversal and riding time advantage to stump Patrovich offensively. Patrovich had previously knocked off No. 1-seeded Mack Lewnes of Cornell in the first round. Reader has achieved All-America honors in his first two seasons as a Cyclone. The Cyclone will continue his quest for the top of the 165-pound podium against Jarrod King of Edinboro.
Two-time NCAA finalist Jake Varner of Iowa State advanced to the semifinals by edging CSU-Bakersfield's Brandon Hasley by decision, 3-1. The Bakersfield, Calif. native has secured All-America honors for the third time on his quest for an NCAA title. Varner's next opponent is Maxwell Askren of Missouri. Varner decisioned Askren 9-4 Feb. 15 at Missouri.
Cyclone Nick Gallick fell in the quarterfinals to returning NCAA champion J Jaggers of Ohio State by fall, 2:12. Gallick struck first in the match with a quick takedown but was caught after being reversed by the Buckeye. Gallick will face Christopher Diaz of Virginia Tech this evening in consolation action.
Iowa State's Cyler Sanderson will continue his hunt for a second All-America plaque in the consolation bracket after falling in the quarterfinals to Nebraska's Jordan Burroughs, 14-6. Sanderson faces Matt Moley of Bloomsburg in consolation round five. Sanderson edged Moley 7-5 at last year's NCAA Championships to place seventh.
Mitch Mueller stayed alive for ISU in the consolations with an emphatic pin from neutral position against Lehigh's Trevor Chinn in 44 seconds. Mueller had Chinn draping over his back and Mueller pressured backwards to secure the pin. The Cyclone junior from Iowa City will face No. 6 Jake Patacsil of Purdue tonight.
“I am having a lot of fun,” Mueller said. “After Midlands, I went back and looked at a lot of things and I'm just not putting so much pressure on myself.”
Duke Burk of Iowa State advanced in the wrestlebacks with a 7-6 decision of Lehigh's Alex Caruso but was stopped short against Indiana's Trevor Perry in the next wrestleback round by major decision, 12-4. Burk finishes 19-9 after the completion of his junior campaign.
Redshirt freshman Jerome Ward of ISU was eliminated in his first trip to the NCAA Championships by 10th-seeded Chris Honeycutt of Edinboro in a loss by decision, 3-2. Ward tallied a 1-2 record in his first NCAA qualification and finishes at 22-12 in his first year of varsity competition.
All-American Nick Fanthorpe of Iowa State will be unable to repeat as he was stopped short in the consolation bracket by Illinois's All-American 133-pounder, Jimmy Kennedy. The lingering effects of the hamstring injury that sidelined him during the middle portion of the season had caught up to Fanthorpe he but still gave Kennedy all he had in a 6-0 loss by decision. Fanthorpe went 1-2 in the tournament and ends his junior campaign at a 21-6 mark. Fanthorpe will look to enter the 100 Win Club of Iowa State wrestling next season as he holds a 82-23 career record.
Iowa Stater Tyler Clark (125) fell in consolation wrestling action to Kent State's Nicholas Bedelyon. Clark went 1-2 in his second trip to the NCAA Championships and finishes his sophomore season with a 25-8 record.
