AMES, Iowa ? The 2008-09 Iowa State women's golf team provided many positives for the young Cyclone nucleus, and more importantly, made strides for next year.
As a team, the Cyclones recorded the second-lowest 54-hole average of any previous ISU women's golf team. The Cyclones also carded three of the top-15 18-hole rounds and two of the top-10 54-hole totals in school history.
Individually, the Cyclones were once again led by veteran Pennapa Pulsawath. The junior from Bangkok, Thailand, led Iowa State for the third straight year in stroke average and placed in the top-27 in seven of 11 tournaments. Her career 76.9 stroke average clip currently ranks second all-time in school history.
Sophomore Victoria Stefansen also shone a bright light on the young golf program, winning medalist honors at the Challenge at Wolfdancer in the fall. She went on to receive two Big 12 Golfer-of-the-Month honors in November and February.
The 2008 fall season was highlighted by a sixth-place finish at Challenge at Wolfdancer in Austin, Texas.
Kristin Paulson provided a spark for the Cyclones, as the freshman from Ottumwa, Iowa inked her name into the record books. At the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz., Paulson tied a school-record for the lowest round ever, with a 69.
Sophomores Laurence Herman and Rachel Reed provided depth for the Cyclones, finishing the season on a strong note. Both received their best placing of the year at the Indiana Invitational, only to top it again weeks later at the Big 12 Championships. Herman and Reed were also voted onto the All-Big 12 Academic team, garnering first-team honors.
Iowa State's best performances of the spring were a fifth-place showing at the Baylor Invitational and a runner-up finish at the Indiana Invitational. Pulsawath paced the Cyclones in both, placing third and fifth, respectively.
ISU ended the season by placing eighth at the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock, Texas.
The Cyclones brings back all of its firepower for next year, as the entire 2008-09 roster returns for next season. Pulsawath looks to carve her way into the record books, as she could go down as one of the most prolific women's golfers in school history.
