AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State track and field team will be traveling to Eugene, Ore. this weekend to compete in the 2009 U.S. Junior Track and Field National Championships. The site of the championships will be held at Hayward Field, one of the best-known historic track and field stadiums in the United States, and site of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
A total of 10 Cyclone athletes will be competing this weekend. This kind of representation is a sign that the Iowa State track and field program is upward bound.
“It just shows the progress we've made as a program,” head coach Corey Ihmels said. “It is great having an Iowa State represented at the U.S. Junior Championships.”
The Cyclone competitors include 400-meter hurdler Kianna Elahi, who placed third in the event at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships last month. Elahi will compete Saturday at 2 p.m. (CST).
“We've got a lot of athletes competing at juniors this weekend, and it will be a great opportunity to get some of our younger athletes more big-time experience,” Ihmels said.
Other notable ISU freshmen competing this weekend are Daniel Newhouse, the seventh-place finisher in the javelin at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, and Danielle Frere, ninth-place finisher in the shot put and the hammer throw at the Big 12 outdoor meet. Frere will compete Friday at 2 p.m. (CST), while Newhouse will compete Sunday in the javelin at 5:10 p.m. (CST).
Freshman Jordon Andreassen will begin competition in the heptathlon Saturday at 11 a.m. (CST) with the 100-meter hurdles. Andreassen finished seventh in the event at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.
