Iowa State's Jon Reader has been busy this summer, competing in freestyle at 74 kg (163 pounds). Reader, a native of Davison, Mich., placed fifth at U.S. Senior Nationals in Las Vegas, Nev. and brought a silver medal home from Venezuela at the Pan-Am Games in April. The Cyclone junior 165-pounder was then back in the United States to take fourth overall at the World Team Trials in Council Bluffs, narrowly missing making the U.S. national freestyle team.
Reader is now currently honing his wrestling skills at the Polish Olympic Training Center in Spala, just outside of Warsaw, Poland. The Iowa Stater will be training with internationally-renowned wrestlers up until he competes in the Ziolkowski International tournament Aug. 12-14.
Reader wrote to cyclones.com today to let Cyclone Nation know how the training in Spala has been going and where he'll be heading next.
Jon Reader's Second Blog Entry from Spala, Poland
Hi everyone!
It is Wednesday around 11:40 a.m. here. We are departing Spala's Olympic Training Center for Warsaw in about 20 minutes, so while we are waiting I thought I'd shoot my Cyclone family an update.
Training has been unbelievable these last few days. Yesterday was the highlight of my trip. I had the chance to work one-on-one with 2008 Olympic 84 kg silver medalist Yusup Abdusalamov from Tajikistan. He showed me a lot of great things that I know will help my career.
On Monday, we took a trip as a team to the former Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz. It was a very chilling and humbling experience. It's hard to believe that so many innocent people went through such a tragedy.
I weigh-in Thursday at 6 p.m., so 11 a.m. Iowa time. I start competition the following day. My weight has been perfect while staying here. I don't think I have had a choice or not to lose weight while eating dry ham sandwiches on "rock" bread. I hope everyone is doing great! Thank you again Cyclone family for all of the support!
Much Love,
Reader
