AMES, Iowa- With the indoor track and field campaign approaching, preseason training is now in top gear. Improvement on and off the field has become the main focus for multi-events and jumps coach Pete Herber.
"My main focus for this season is showing constant improvement in my group." Herber said. "I feel that I have a really good group of kids this year, but we are very young."
Starting the season with 11 freshmen, one transfer, and five returning athletes Herber wants all of them to understand the importance of incremental improvement.
"If we can get everyone understanding that small daily improvements in practice this time of year will lead to bigger improvements in the spring, then we should be in good shape," Herber said.
Herber expects some differences within the roles of some team members with such a young unit.
"The group of returners has really done an excellent job of taking more of a leadership role this fall." Herber said. "We definitely need that in order for this group of young men and women to be successful."
Herber is excited about his multi-event group this year and expects a very productive season.
"I think we can do some good things in the combined events on both sides." Herber said. "Jamal Currica has been having a real good fall and is much improved from a year ago. Jordon Andreassen and Anna Holtermann are going to lead a strong group of heptathletes that can be as good as any in the Big 12. Richard McCoy was a nice addition to the group and should be a point scorer in the conference."
McCoy, a junior college transfer, has had a productive training regimen, getting ready for the season as he gets to know his coach and his teammates.
"Preseason training has been tough but beneficial." McCoy said. "It has been a lot of cardio and base training the first month, which is what we need. I enjoy working with my teammates. You gain respect from one another when you get through these hard preseason workouts together."
There is an understanding between both coach and teammates about the expectations for the season. Coach Herber and his athletes have high goals for the season.
"We need to be productive at the conference meets. This group has the ability to do that as long as we keep making the improvements this fall." Herber said.
Coach Herber and the multi-events group will continue to work on improving their performances during the fall in order to be ready for the indoor season, which starts in mid-December.
