AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team racked up victories in nine of 11 events on Saturday en route to a 101-64 victory over the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks at Beyer Pool. The win moves Iowa State to 1-1 on the season in dual meets.
“I was very pleased with how we attacked our races,” Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said. “That was one of the goals we challenged our women with this week, to get out and not be so tentative.”
It was a big day in the diving well for the Iowa State divers as three Cyclones punched their tickets for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in March.
Junior Lauren Naeve picked up the victory on 1-meter with her score of 271.10. Sarah Nelson picked up a score of 269.24 and Abby Christensen joined in with a 266.78 on the board.
“It was exciting,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “I have never had that many qualifiers in the first two meets of the season. Our team goal was to get three in and we are going to get more. They have met their goal and I can't be more excited for Lauren, Abby and Sarah. It was exciting to see.”
It will mark the second trip to the meet for Christensen and the first for Naeve and Nelson.
On 3-meter, the Cyclone who already punched her ticket to the Zone Diving meet, Jenn Botsch, put up the highest score of the day with her 281.33. That made it two 280-plus scores in two meets for Botsch this season but it almost didn't happen after she hit the board during the meet warm-up.
“That was exciting, it was not a one-time wonder,” Warrick stated. “She hit her feet in warm-ups doing her inward 2 ½. She was alright but the mental toughness it took to get up there and do it again during the meet is something I am very proud of her for.”
Elena Carvell had another big day in the pool, collecting three victories on the day. The sophomore anchored the winning 200 medley relay team before picking up victories in the 50 and 100 free in 24.84 and 53.97, respectively.
“It was the first time she swam the 100 free as a Cyclone,” Sorenson noted. “It was a great swim for her. She is really coming around for us and racing really well.”
Dani Harris was another top Cyclone on the day. Harris led off for the winning 200 medley relay team and also posted a first place finish in the 200 breaststroke.
“She swam the 200 breast a couple of times last year for us,” Sorenson stated. “We wanted to see where she was at in that this season for her 200 IM down the road. She swam a very smart race.”
The Cyclones got the meet started off right with a one-two finish in the 200 medley relay with the team of Harris, Jeli Nixt, Sarah Norris and Elena Carvell bringing home the victory.
Jenny Vondenkamp took the victory in the 200 free, coming from behind against Kalyn Amundsen in the final 50 yards to post her winning time of 1:56.32. Alex Gustafson finished second and Amundsen third.
Iowa State took the top three spots in the 200 butterfly with Tiana Wollin coming through first for the Cyclones in 2:13.01, just edging out Meredith Doran's 2:13.63. Carissa Poeschel finished third.
Chelsea Tomek continued Iowa State's winning ways in the 200 backstroke with a 2:09.78 in the event. Freshman Alex Gustafson posted her first event win as a Cyclone, taking the 500 free in 5:10.56.
The Cyclones return to Beyer Hall next weekend with a pair of meets. Iowa State will take on the South Dakota Coyotes Friday night at 6 p.m. The next day, Oct. 30, the Cyclones host a double-dual meet involving South Dakota State and Western Illinois that is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
