AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State divers will be in action January 3-5 at the Tennessee Diving Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn. Monday's 3-meter prelims and Tuesday's 1-meter prelims begin at 12 p.m. with finals immediately following each. The Wednesday platform diving competition is finals-only and will be at 11:30 a.m.
The Cyclone divers have had a good start to the season, with four NCAA Zone Diving qualifiers so far. The Iowa State divers have collected nine event wins on the season.
“I thought the month of October went really well,” diving coach
Jeff Warrick said. “We had four zone qualifiers and we were receiving high marks. They were exceeding my expectations and doing a great job. In November, we were not as consistent as I hoped. The first half of the season went really well, but we need to put some things together.”
The Tennessee Diving Invitational allows for the Cyclone divers to compete against top competition. Though the faces will be different than those that they see at the Big 12 Championships and the Zone Diving Championships, the elite level competition will be similar. Six All-Americans are slated to compete at the meet. Warrick is looking for the Iowa State divers to be competing at a high level.
“This is huge for us,” Warrick noted. “The divers we are going to see there are not going to be the divers we see at the Big 12 Championships but we are going to see a lot of good divers here. This is a test of how they are going to perform in a big situation. I want to see if they are going to fold or are they going to compete to what they know they can do.”
The invite also gives the Cyclones their last chance to compete on platform prior to the Big 12 Championships. Junior
Sarah Nelson put up one of the best platform scores in school history earlier this season at the Northwestern Invitational, winning the event with her 245.90. While this will be the last platform competition before the conference championships, Warrick will be looking for areas to improve in between now and the end of the season.
“The meet gives them a good chance to compete on platform,” Warrick noted. “This will be a nice chance to get up there and show what we can do. The nice thing is that we will be able to know what we can adjust on because we will have the practice time.”
Nelson leads the divers in event wins with three this season. Along with being the top platform scorer, Nelson is second on 1-meter as well (269.24).
Lauren Naeve is the team-leader on 1-meter (271.10) but will not compete due to injury.
Jenn Botsch is the team leader on 3-meter (283.35).
