AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State swimming and diving team continues its season Friday night with a 6 p.m. Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series showdown against the Iowa Hawkeyes at the Campus Wellness and Recreation Center in Iowa City. The Cyclones come into the meet carrying a 5-1 dual meet record.
This is Iowa State's first meet since a second-place showing at the TYR Northwestern Invitational Nov. 19-21 in Evanston, Ill., in which the Cyclones amassed 803 team points. Iowa hosted the Hawkeye Invitational over the weekend and put in a third-place effort with 853 team points.
Last season's meeting in Ames went in favor of the Cyclones with Iowa State picking up a 167-133 victory. The last four meetings in the series have seen the home team prevail. Iowa leads the all-time series 21-14.
The top Cyclones in the pool this season have been a pair of sophomores. Dani Harris has collected 14 event wins this season (10 individual, four relay). The Clive native is the team leader in the 100-yard freestyle, 100- and 200-backstroke, 200-breaststroke and 200- and 400-individual medley. Elena Carvell has picked up 13 event victories this season, with a team-high eight in relay events. Senior Jenny Vondenkamp has been a key contributor in the distance events, recording seven individual event victories so far this season.
The Iowa State divers have been a competitive squad throughout the season. Four different divers have collected event victories on the season. Jenn Botsch, Abby Christensen, Lauren Naeve and Sarah Nelson have seen their scores earn them trips to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in March in Austin, Texas. Naeve, an Ames native, is the top Cyclone on 1-meter this season with a score of 271.10. Botsch is the top Iowa Stater on 3-meter at 283.35 and Nelson recorded the third-best platform score in school history at the Northwestern Invitational with her score of 245.90.
