AMES, Iowa - With the indoor track and field season well under way, the entire Iowa State team is looking to have a successful season. The women's throwers are already off to an impressive start. In his first season at ISU, throws coach Grant Wall has a group of highly motivated athletes. He is very pleased with the results produced so far.
"We're a month out from conference, and we're ahead of where I thought we would be," coach Wall said. "We've really been able to put the pieces together in the weight throw, and I think we could definitely make some noise in the Big 12 landscape."
Among ISU's five healthy throwers, the Cyclones have one ranked 29th nationally, with two others ranked among the top 50.
Junior captain Britta Christofferson is also pleased with how the indoor season is shaping up.
"I would agree with (coach Wall); it's going really well," Christofferson said. "I'm happy with how things are going so far. It's a different program than what we're used to, but obviously it's working."
Christofferson and sophomores Laishema Hampton and Danielle Frere all set new personal records at the inaugural Bill Bergan Invitational (Jan. 30). Hampton threw a new personal best by nearly a foot, while Christofferson and Frere also hit new personal bests by a wide margin.
"It's really unique to have that many women throwing that well," Wall said. "As a group, they have found a way to challenge each other. They can walk away from those challenges, whether it's in practice or meets, pushing each other."
However, working together as a team is an adjustment for the returning Cyclone throwers.
"I think last year everyone was out to do their own thing," Hampton said. "This year it's more of a team effort. Rather than just having other teams push us, we push each other and then have other teams pushing us as well."
Having a new coach this season has only encouraged the group to try harder in practice, and throw better in meets.
"Coach Wall is great," Frere said. "He's always so positive, and he's always encouraging, and that makes for a much better learning environment."
Looking ahead to the Big 12 Indoor Championships (Feb. 26-27), coach Wall is simply looking to see consistency from his throwers.
"We'll see what happens in three weeks," Wall said. "I think it's going to be good. Usually when the big throws come is when you least expect it."
The throwers continue competition this weekend at the Cyclone Open (Feb. 6-7) at the Lied Recreational Center.
