AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women swept the top five spots in the weight throw, highlighting competition for the Cyclones Friday at the inaugural Cyclone Open. Sophomore Laishema Hampton led the group with a first place finish (57-05.00), her third championship of the season, while junior Britta Christofferson and sophomore Danielle Frere finished second and third, respectively. Freshman Hayli Bozarth finished fourth, while junior Emily Nugent finished fifth.
"We were going into the last throw, and I knew Danielle wasn't quite throwing what she could today," assistant coach Grant Wall said. "I told her I'd like to get a sweep today, and then she had a big throw that took her from seventh up to third. I love the sweep. Our distances are right around where I thought they'd be. We changed up the training this week because people weren't feeling quite as crisp as last week. I was just happy they were able to get the sweep. I thought they competed well."
The Iowa State men faired well in the weight throw as well. Junior Josh Koglin had the best outing for a collegiate athlete, finishing runner-up (58-01.25), while senior Robbie Utterback finished third (55-08.50), a personal record. Sophomore Mike Zika finished fourth (55-03.50), a personal best.
Sophomore Caitlyn Weber set a personal best in the pole vault (11-05.75), finishing third. Weber tied the school record set by Tamela Jadin in 2004. Freshman Ashley Leitner finished fifth (10-00).
"I guess tying the school record has kind of been there, but I think the main goal is just to get to (Big 12 Championships) and scoring points," Weber said. "Tying the school record right now is good, but I want more. I was happy last year that I made it to indoor (Big 12 Championships), but I didn't score for the team. This year, I hope it's going to be a lot better, and I'm hoping to actually score points."
The Cyclone Open will continue tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. with the women's shot put and the women's non-seeded 3,000-meter run. Results will be posted on cyclones.com.
