FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- From the start Lisa Koll wanted to run "her race" in the 3,000-meter run at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday. Koll, from Fort Dodge, had won the 5,000 meters Friday night. Her chief challenger, Angela Bizzarri of Illinois had not run the 5,000. Koll ran it her way only to be edged at the finish by Bizzarri, the defending NCAA Cross Country champion, for the 3,000 crown. Bizzari finished in 8:57.40 just ahead of Koll, who crossed the line in 8:57.52.
"I knew that (Bizzarri) had a good kick," Koll said. "If I was going to get beat it would be on my terms. I went out fast, kept a steady pace and then with a few laps to go I pressed the pace."
Â
Iowa State's 18 points tied the Cyclones for 10th in the final team standings with West Virginia and Virginia Tech. It was ISU's first top 10 track team finish at an NCAA Championships. Oregon won the women's team title with 61 points.
Â
Koll led the first 13 laps, leaving only Bizzari and Villanova's Sheila Reid as challengers in the last 1,000 meters. Bizzarri went to the lead with 500 meters left in the race. Koll was not finished. The Cyclone came back and drew nearly even with Bizzarri with 150 meters to go but Bizzari prevailed by the thinest of margins.
Â
"I knew that not being fresh after running the 5,000 that I would have to go out and make the field work hard," Koll said. "That's the first time I've been involved in a really close finish like that."
Â
Cyclone coach Corey Ihmels commended Koll.
Â
"Tonight she showed what a competitor she is," Ihmels said. "She came back on the winner when a lot of people thought she was finished. People don't get to see that focused determination that she has because usually in the longer races she has taken a significant lead. We knew this one would be more of a challenge because she ran the 5,000 last night."
Â
Koll, now a nine-time All-American, will take a couple weeks off from competition before starting the outdoor season.
