WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ? Tien Tran wrapped up her Iowa State diving career Saturday with a 19th-place finish on platform at the NCAA Championships on the campus of Purdue University. Tran posted a five-dive score of 239.95, only 9.60 points out of 16th place and All-American honors.
“Overall, I thought she was fantastic,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “She was in the hunt after her first two dives, but she just missed her third dive.”
Tran got off to a strong start, posting scores of 54.60 and 55.80 on her first two dives, seeing herself into 10th place after the first two dives.
“That is how we wanted to start,” Warrick said. “I can't expect much better than that and I was extremely happy and so was she.”
On her third dive, Tran over rotated her dive going into the water, resulting in a score of 31.50 and setting herself back into 24th place.
“She just missed her third dive, she overdid it a little bit and that took her out of it,” Warrick said. “She came back strong though and just missed out. She did so well on her first two dives and that made the third dive sting that much more.”
Tran had a strong recovery, posting scores of 46.80 and 51.25 on her final two dives to place herself in 19th.
Saturday saw the end of the career of one of Iowa State's best divers. Tran became the third diver to represent Iowa State at the NCAA Championships, collected seven All-Big 12 records and leaves ISU with the school record on 3-meter and platform.
“She represented Iowa State with class this weekend,” Warrick said. “It is always sad to see the seniors go, but she leaves a legacy with her school records, her work ethic, her success at the conference and national championships and the job she did as a captain this season. She has been a good example for the younger divers to use during the rest of their time at Iowa State.”
