AUSTIN, Texas -Â Iowa State senior Lisa Koll's first-place finish Saturday in the 5,000-meter race of the NCAA West Regional earned her a spot in the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. ISU junior Semehar Tesfaye also earned a spot in the national championship (16:42.27), finishing in 12th place. Both Koll and Tesfaye had qualifed for the NCAA 10,000-meter run. Betsy Saina did not qualify for the 5,000 meters but will also run the 10,000 meters in Eugene.
"I think it is great for for all three of us," Koll said. "We show up to practice every day, and being in the same races, all three of us can work together. It means so much more to be a part of something that is bigger than yourself. I think I say a lot, not just for me but about our program; to have three people qualify for the (10,00-meter race) and two people in the (5,000-meter race), for both of those girls it just shows great things for the future."
Iowa State senior Brandon Rooney finished 11th overall in the men's 1,500-meter run (3:40.62), earning him a trip to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. June 9-12.
"Obviously it feels great," Rooney said. "At the end of the year if you were to tell me that I was going to make if to nationals with a (3:40), I would have said you were crazy," Rooney said. "Everything kind of clicked this year. I had great training partners, and everything kind of fell into place."
While sophomore Rico Loy did not make the semifinal in the men's 1,500-meter run, Rooney praised his training partner.
"Your training partner is irreplaceable," Rooney said. "When you don't have someone to push you hard when you're having a bad day; or to help you when it's going bad, then your pretty much doomed to give up. Rico he's been there every work out this year and has been so consistent."
Senior Lashawn Wright finished 11th overall in the women's 200-meter dash (23.63), also earning a trip to the national championships. Wright finished fifth in the second-heat of the 200-meter dash, earning a person best time.
"It really is a blessing for me this year just because I have dealt with so much," Wright said. "I was really discouraged from being out with surgery and trying to get back; it has been a really long road but I have had great teammates to lift my spirits up. I can't really express how excited I am."
