EUGENE, Ore. – The sun finally came out in force at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday and its light shown on Iowa State's eighth-place finish in the women's division, the best finish in school history. The Cyclones' previous best NCAA outdoor finish was 15th in 1984. Texas A&M won the women's team title with 72 points. Oregon (57), Florida (40), Penn State (34), Virginia Tech (33), LSU (31), UTEP (29), ISU (28) and Southern Illinois and Oklahoma (26) rounded out the top ten.
The Iowa State men tied for 27th in the team scoring with 10 points. Texas A& M won the men's team competition with 55 points.
As action at Hayward Field began Saturday, Cyclone Lisa Koll made a tour of the historic grandstands on a belated victory lap. Koll, who signed a slew of autographs, won both the 10,000 meters and the 5,000 meters at this year's championship and received one last standing ovation from a knowledgable crowd that fully appreciated her pair of runaway victories.
"We have had some outstanding performances this season and we are working on building a program that is recognized nationally," Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels said. "We have a lot to look forward to and I am already looking ahead to next season."
Drake Stadium in Des Moines will host the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Champioships.
