AMES, Iowa ? The Big 12 Conference chose Iowa State diver
Sarah Nelson as its diver of the week for the first week of January. This is Nelson's first diver-of-the-week award from the Big 12. The junior from Decorah, Iowa becomes the fourth diver in Iowa State to win an award from the conference, joining Haley Haynes,
Tien Tran (three-time winner) and Linda Wagner (two-time winner).
Nelson and the Cyclones competed at the Tennessee Diving Invitational last week. Nelson led the Cyclones on 1-meter with a score of 239.60 and a 14th-place finish, just missing out on the 12-diver finals. On platform, Nelson finished 19th in the finals-only platform event with a score of 196.80. That was the third highest score of Nelson's career on the high board.
Nelson has been one of the top Cyclone divers this season. The junior has picked up three event wins this season, including a 1-meter/3-meter sweep in the double-dual meet against South Dakota State and Western Illinois. Nelson's 245.90 on platform at the Northwestern Invitational was enough for the event win and the third-highest score in school history. Nelson has also qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in March.
Iuliia Kuzhil of Kansas and Maria Sommer of Texas A&M was named Big 12 swimmers of the week.
