AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State Cyclones are heading to Columbia, Mo. this weekend to compete in their first dual meet of the new year against the University of Missouri Tigers. The meet will begin at 1 p.m.
The Cyclones swim team last faced the University of Iowa on Dec 10 in Iowa City. The Cyclones picked up four event wins against the Hawkeyes with sophomore
Dani Harris finishing first in both backstroke events with a time of 55.73 in the 100 and 2:00.97 in the 200.
Many season-best times were put up including
Jeli Nixt finishing second in the 100 breast touching the wall at 1:03.83. Nixt also had a season-best time of 2:23.25 in the 200.
“In practice we are practicing more speed and fine tuning all aspects of the race, to improve mistakes from Iowa and the TYR Invitational,” Iowa State head coach
Duane Sorenson said.
The No. 25 Tigers will create strong competition for the Cyclones. Missouri fell to the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers in their last meet but will bring strong inner conference competition.
“We are asking the women to stand up and race against some of the best in the conference as well as in the nation,” Sorenson stated. “They have great depth and are going to be a challenge.”
The Tigers Dominique Bouchard will be a great match up for the Cyclones. Against the Golden Gophers, Bouchard finished first in the 100 back, clocking in at 55.45 along with another first place finish in the 200 back with a time of 1:59.72.
The Cyclones diving team last traveled to Knoxville, Tenn. Jan. 3-5 for the Tennessee Diving Invitational. This challenged the team to compete against teams they normally do not compete against.
Sarah Nelson, the reigning Big 12 Diver of the Week, led the Cyclones on platform, collecting a 19th-place finish with a five-dive score of 196.80.
“It's important to be ready because this is our first Big 12 dual meet,” diving coach
Jeff Warrick said. “We are working on dual meet goals as well as long term goals and fine tuning our dives.
“We have been working on consistency, and more repetition,” Warrick stated. “We have been narrowing down and ignoring the problem dives.”
Against the Golden Gophers, the Tigers' Loren Figueroa placed second in the 1-meter dive, with 303.60 points, along with teammate Jordan Morcom who placed second in the 3-meter with 311.02 points.
