AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior
Sarah Nelson and redshirt freshman Jessica Nicholson will travel to Iowa City for the USA Diving Winter National Championships on Sunday and Monday. The diving will commence each day at 2 p.m. CST with 3-meter on Sunday and 1-meter on Monday.
“I want them to get more big meet experience,” diving coach
Jeff Warrick said. “I want them to be comfortable competing with the best divers. There will be world-class divers here and some Olympians at this meet. It will be a great atmosphere and there will be great diving. I want them to be part of it, have fun and build off of it for the rest of the season.”
Nelson sits in the top two for both springboard and platform diving for Iowa State this season, setting career-highs in all three events. She has qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in March and her platform diving score of 245.90 in November at the Northwestern Invitational ranks third in school history.
Nicholson has been a pleasant surprise this season, ranking fourth for the Cyclones on 1-meter and 3-meter and second on platform
“I think she has done fantastic this season, making big leaps in terms of her ability,” Warrick stated. “She trains really hard. She still has a ways to go but she has made a lot of progress and I can't be happier with how she has done so far.”
Nicholson had a career-best performance on 3-meter at Missouri last weekend, posting a score of 272.93.
