KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Iowa State's divers wrapped up competition at the Tennessee Diving Invitational Wednesday with the platform diving event. The Cyclones were led in the finals-only format event by
Sarah Nelson, who collected a 19th place finish with a five-dive score of 196.80.
“It was a good performance for Sarah,” diving coach
Jeff Warrick said. “It was not the exciting performance that I know she has in her but it was solid. She was just a little off on a couple of dives but nothing major. She has been doing the hard work and she needs to find that high level of consistency next.”
The junior had strong first and third dives, earning 43.20 points on her inward 1 ½ somersault pike and 45.00 for her back 2 ½ somersault pike. Nelson's score of 196.80 was the third-highest of her Iowa State career.
Next on the charts for the Cyclones was
Justine Anders. The senior finished in 25th place with a score of 171.35. The score was the second-highest of her career, and not too far off her best of 178.95 at the Northwestern Invitational back in November.
“Justine has really pulled it together well this week,” Warrick noted. “With over 40 divers in the competition, I was glad to see her step up this week by being second-best on the team on 3-meter and platform. She can feel good about what she did today.”
Right behind Anders in 26th was Jessica Nicholson with 170.75.
Abby Christensen finished in 28th place, posting a score of 166.90.
Jenn Botsch came right after Christensen in 29th at 164.15.
Marley Dobyns rounded out the Cyclone lineup on the day with a career-best 144.75 to finish 33rd.
After the week of invitational competition, Warrick hopes that the Cyclone divers can take their experience from the week to help prepare them for the rest of the season.
“I hope they get excited,” Warrick said. “They need to train hard and smart day in and day out. This is the level of competition we will see the rest of the season. It will be tough to compete for those finals spots at the Big 12 Championships and the Zone Diving meet. So hopefully this will benefit us for the rest of the season.”
The Iowa State swimming and diving teams return to the pool January 22 with a double-dual meet at Missouri featuring the host Tigers and Missouri State. The meet is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
