AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State swimming and diving team will host Big Ten rivals Minnesota this Saturday, Oct. 15. The meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m. CDT at Beyer Pool and admission is free.
Defeating the Northern Iowa Panthers this past weekend, the Cyclones are anticipating an exciting meet against the Golden Gophers. With top finishes in 13 of 16 events against the Panthers, the Cyclones are looking to continue their success in the pool.
"We're taking this as an opportunity to compete against some of the top women in the nation, and really race against them and see how we stack up," head coach Duane Sorenson said.
The Gophers will be top competition for Cyclones, coming off a recent victory over Michigan. The reigning Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, sophomore Tess Behrens will provide great competition in the 200 backstroke, with her recent first place finish over Michigan with a time of 2:00.74.
"They had three NCAA Champions last year, in the 100 breaststroke and another lady in the 200 breaststroke and a diver that is a national champion, " Sorenson said. "They are just a top rate team up and down the line. They have a tremendous amount of depth and are great competitors."
The Gophers will also provide solid competition in the breaststroke events. Against Michigan, junior Haley Spencer earned her fifth win of the meet finishing the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:14.92.
"We have spent the last month doing a lot of aerobic work, and now were going into a little more speed threshold work," Sorenson said. "We are just trying to fine tune little things we found from this past weekend."
The divers will also see plenty of good competition as well against Minnesota after their success against Northern Iowa.
"This meet will be great competition and we will see some really good diving from our competitors," diving coach Jeff Warrick noted. "We are really looking forward to the challenge and really stepping up, as well as working on more consistent execution for our returning divers and the basics and fundamentals for our freshman."
