BROOKINGS, S.D. - The Iowa State Cyclone swimming and diving team racked up victories in 14 of 16 events on Saturday to defeat the South Dakota State Jackrabbits 220-79. The win moves Iowa State to a 3-1 dual meet record for the season.
"I was very pleased with how the women swam today," head coach
Duane Sorenson said. "Especially after coming off competition Friday night."
The Cyclones saw excitement in the diving well when redshirt sophomore Jessica Nicholson earned a trip to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in March with a 3-meter score of 291.15. The career-best score moves Nicholson into eighth place in school history on 3-meter.
"I am really happy with how the meet went," diving coach
Jeff Warrick said. "We went a little different today with 3-meter first, and it was very exciting for Jessica to earn her Zone score in the first event. It has been something that was coming for a long time and today she was much more consistent on her takeoffs."
Continuing to show promise was freshman
Amanda Paulson with two individual event wins in the 50 and 100 freestyles, clocking in with times of 24.27 and 53.95, respectively. Paulson also contributed to two relay wins for the afternoon. Paulson swam the butterfly leg for the winning 200 medley relay team (1:47.76) and led off for the winning 400 free relay squad (3:36.29).
"Amanda swam her best times in both the 50 and 100 freestyle and swam at the high level," Sorenson noted. "She was a top-level swimmer coming in and is continuing to swim at that level and become better."
The Cyclones dominated the 100 butterfly event with a sweep of the top three spots.
Imelda Wistey finished first in 59.32 just edging out
Sarah Norris with a time of 59.85 and
Tiana Wollin finishing third in 1:00.62.
