AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State swimming and diving team hosted its annual intrasquad meet Friday night at Beyer Pool. The gold squad came out ahead with 10 event wins to end the meet with a final score of 129-87.
"I was very pleased with how the women raced and how they competed against each other," head coach
Duane Sorenson said. "The women raced every length of the pool."
To start off the evening, the gold 200 medley relay team, consisting of
Sarah Norris,
Imelda Wistey,
Britta Sortland and
Katie Vollhaber finished first with a time of 1:49.28.
In the 500 freestyle, senior
Meredith Doran out-touched freshman
Elizabeth Kleiner to win the first event of the meet for the cardinal squad with a time of 5:13.35.
The gold team swept the 50 freestyle with the top three finishes, freshman
Britta Sortland leading the event. Vollhaber and Noris touched second and third with times of 24.85 and 25.06, respectively.
The cardinal team saw success again in the 100 butterfly with junior
Tiana Wollin finishing with a time of 59.14.
To finish the night in the pool the gold team relay consisting of Sortland, Vollhaber, Norris and
Sarah Deis finished first with a time of 1:39.64 with the cardinal squad of
Amanda Paulson, Doran,
Bri Carlberg and
Kristy Kunkel close behind with a final time of 1:40.91
Deis, a freshman for the gold squad, saw great success throughout the evening with first place finishes in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.67, and a winning time of 1:57.59 in the 200 freestyle. Deis also contributed to the final win of the meet in the 200 freestyle relay.
"We were very pleased with how
Sarah Deis competed tonight," Sorenson said. "We knew she was a tremendous competitor when we were recruiting her and she really proved herself tonight."
The gold team saw success in the diving well with
Sarah Nelson finishing first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter with 263.63 and 244.35 points, respectively.
For the cardinal team Jessica Nicholson led the squad finishing second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter with 246.45 and 239.48 points, respectively.
The Cyclones will travel to face the University of Northern Iowa Saturday with the meet slated to begin at 10 a.m. CDT.
"We are looking to stand up tomorrow and swim longer races," Sorenson noted. "We will be swimming longer races, and are looking to see where we are in training."
