AMES, Iowa - The No. 21 Iowa State wrestling team plays host to the annual Harold Nichols Cyclone Open Sunday in Hilton Coliseum. Doors will open for the general public at 8 a.m. with competition beginning by 9 a.m. Eight mats will be set up for matches and the tournament is expected to end around 8 p.m.
20 Iowa State wrestlers will be taking part in the action Sunday, 11 of which will compete unattached for the Cyclones. Iowa State athletics communications staff will be live-blogging for the entirety of the tournament on cyclones.com.
Iowa State enters the Cyclone Open with an 0-2 record in dual competition, but sports five ranked wrestlers in this week's Intermat poll, two of which will be competing Sunday. Redshirt senior and captain for the Cyclones, Andrew Sorenson, is Iowa State's highest-ranked wrestler at the No. 7 spot. 165-pounder Sorenson pinned his first opponent of the season and beat his second in a 5-2 decision. Redshirt freshman Ryak Finch is ranked No. 12 at 125 pounds after coming away from the Nor'Easter duals with a 2-0.
Redshirt freshman Mikey England stunned Boston's No. 5 Hunter Meys at the Nor'Easter Duals Nov. 6. After losing his first match of the season to Army's Collin Wittmeyer by major decision, England came back strong and battled through after trailing 3-1 heading into the final period with Meys. For the Centerville, Iowa native, beating the nation's fifth-ranked wrestler at 174 pounds was a confidence booster to say the least.
"I think that every now and then your confidence level is what determines whether you're going to win or lose," said Iowa State head wrestling coach Kevin Jackson. "It's what your thought process is, what's going on in your mind when the match is going on and there was a point in that match where he decided he was going to win and compete to his full potential."
All four Cyclones who won titles at the annual Kaye Young Open Nov. 5 will be amongst the competitors Sunday. Freshman Logan Molina will participate in the 165 weight division and redshirt junior Matt Gibson will be competing at heavyweight, both unattached. 149-pounder Joey Cozart and 174-pounder Quinn Wilson will be wrestling for the first time in an Iowa State singlet at the Open.
All tickets for the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open are general admission and will be $10 for adults and $5 for youth. The first row in Section 111 and 112 will be reserved for Mat Cy'd ticket holders only. Members will be wearing blue wristbands to designate they are part of the Mat Cy'd Club.
No outside food or drink will be allowed into Hilton Coliseum. Concession stands will be open throughout the day and fans will be allowed to come and go as they please and reenter the facility.
Fans with wrestling season parking passes will be allowed in the four reserved lots (C1, C2, C3 & D1) as well as the East Ramp. Teams and volunteer workers are to enter Hilton through the East ramp where check-in will occur. Doors will be open for wrestling to check-in at 6 a.m., with weigh-ins and skin checks set for 7 a.m.
