AMES, Iowa- After two weeks out of competition the Iowa State Cyclones will head to Evanston, Ill. to compete at the Northwestern Invitational Friday Nov. 18-20. The invitational consists of prelims at 9 a.m. CST and finals beginning at 5 p.m. CST each day. Live stats for the meet can be found by clicking here.
The Northwestern Invitational will provide the Cyclones with a chance to swim against teams that are not a part of their regular season schedule. Including Northwestern, Illinois, Nebraska, Cleveland State, Missouri State, Illinois-Chicago and Kenyon College.
"This meet is a great opportunity for the women to stand up and race against many other teams," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "There will be eight total teams on the women's side of the meet and we will have a chance to swim against many Big Ten teams such as Nebraska, Illinois and Northwestern and see how we stand up. They all have excellent programs and it will be great to see how our women rank against everyone else."
Last year the Cyclones finished the meet in second place behind Northwestern ending the three-day invitational with 803 points. The meet will model the Big 12 Championships, being a multi-day meet with a prelims and finals session.
"The meet is in championship format," Sorenson stated. "There are prelims in the morning and finals in the evening with the top eight from prelims swimming in the final heat, and eight to sixteen in the consolation heat, and will have seven through 24 in the bonus heat."
After extremely successful back-to-back meets against South Dakota and South Dakota State the Cyclones have had two weeks free to prepare for this weekend.
"We have done a lot more speed work this week and last," Sorenson stated. "The previous two weeks have been the hardest two weeks we have done this season. We will rest a little bit, taking off morning practice so the women have a little more energy so they will have a chance to compete fast and swim well."
In the diving well the Cyclones are preparing for a successful weekend.
"The invitational will be really good meet for us," diving coach Jeff Warrick said. "We've had almost two weeks off of competition so we have had plenty of time to prepare. It's a big meet so it should be fun and challenging as well as a good meet to get us ready for the end of the season."
This will be the first time the divers see action on the platform board this year. At last year's invitational, Sarah Nelson picked up the platform diving title with a score of 245.90, the third highest in school history.
"I am looking for some good competition from Sarah Nelson and Jessica Nicholson," Warrick stated. "I think they are really going to do a great job. We have been able to take a little bit more time and not have to rush for the week to get prepared. We have done more repetitions on some dives, to really fine tune and get those dives to look good."
