AMES, Iowa- Iowa State swimming and diving head coach Duane Sorenson announced the signing of two swimmers for the 2012-13 season on Wednesday.
Among the future Cyclones is Kaylee Kucera from Hutchinson, Minn. Kucera is a two-time state record holder in the 400 freestyle relay, and helped lead the Hutchinson Tigers to a state championship last season. At the 2011 Minnesota State High School Championships, she swam the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay team which won first with a time of 1:49.07 and earned a second-place finish and personal best in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 56.35.
"Kaylee is a diamond in the rough," Sorenson said. "She is a three-sport athlete and has a lot of natural speed. We think she will get nothing but faster as she goes along."
The Cyclones also signed Marissa Engel from Grayslake Central High School in Grayslake, Ill. Engel earned the 2011 Illinois Long Corse State Championship in the 200 back with a time of 2:22.55. She also holds the Fox Valley Conference record in the 100 backstroke since 2010. Engel is a five- time Illinois High School Association state qualifier in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM.
"Marissa is a very intelligent swimmer," Sorenson stated. "She never had a chance to be on a high school team, so she hasn't had that team excitement you get. She has been training club her entire life. She is a very team oriented person, and she's going to fit in really well."
