AMES, Iowa-The Iowa State swimming and diving team will host in-state rival Iowa this Friday as part of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. The meet is slated to begin at 6 p.m. CST at Beyer Pool and admission is free.
"Being an in-state rivalry, it's always a really fun and exciting meet,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “We've never had what we call a bad meet against them because both teams are really excited and push each other to the limits.”
"Right after our TYR Invite meet, we really upped our yardage again and as they say, really hammered them," Sorenson noted. "They have been training very well and at a very high level, to get ready for Iowa on Friday."
The Hawkeyes will provide the Cyclones with great competition throughout the evening. The Hawkeyes most recently hosted the Hawkeye Invitational, where they finish third.
"Iowa is very loaded," Sorenson said."They have a young freshman Becky Stoughton, who has set five school records and a number of pool records. She is one of the top distance swimmers in the country."
The Hawkeyes will challenge the Cyclones in many events, including the breaststroke and freestyle events. Sophomore Karoline Wartalowicz collected a personal best finishing with a time of 2:16.89 in the 200 breaststroke at the Hawkeye Invitational putting her second on Iowa's all-time top performance list. Wartalowicz also finished fourth in finals in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.25.
"Iowa is loaded in the backstroke, has good butterflyers, good IMers and is strong all the way through," Sorenson stated. "All the races will be pretty close, except the distance freestyle races."
The Cyclones will also be pushed in the diving well this Friday.
"We're going to step up," diving coach Jeff Warrick said. "It's an exciting meet against Iowa; it's always a big completion for us and I think we will be ready and perform well."
At the TYR Invitational, Jessica Henderson continued to show promise, leading the Cyclones on both 1-meter with a final score of 247.45, and 3-meter, with a score of 253.45.
"We have been approaching the mental side of the sport a little bit more and working on visualization," Warrick said. "Seeing themselves perform to the ability they can and overcoming the obstacles."
Iowa State will face senior Veronica Rydze, the reigning Big Ten Diver of the Week. At the Hawkeye Invitational Rydze claimed the 1 and 3-meter diving titles with scores of 308.95 and 345.90, respectively.
