AMES, Iowa -After a strong showing in the fall, the Iowa State women's golf team has momentum behind its swing going into the spring season. The Cyclones placed fourth or better in all five fall meets, capped off by a victory at the Challenge at Onion Creek in November.
The 26th-ranked Cyclones begin their spring season on Feb. 13-15 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. The team spent the last couple months honing its skills at the Cyclone Golf Performance Center and the Bergstrom Indoor Practice Facility. Head coach Christie Martens knows the importance of having access to such outstanding facilities for off-season prep work.
"We have really utilized our great facilities a lot this year," Martens said. "We have been in the Bergstrom practicing our wedge shots and wedge distances. I can already see the improvement in their confidence and short game from the practices we have had in the offseason."
The Cyclones have been gaining national attention since earning their first NCAA Regional bid in over 14 years in 2010. Golfweek recently noted Iowa State as one of its teams to watch in the spring. Other teams on the list include: LSU (4), Colorado (24), Mississippi (34) and Florida International (36).
Led by seniors Victoria Stefansen and Laurence Herman, Iowa State had one of its best fall campaigns since 1993, when it won the Big Eight Conference championship.
Stefansen, with a 75.06 stroke average and two top-10 finishes, and Herman, who had a 74.60 stroke average and three top-10 showings, were essential to the team's recent success. Both have played in over 100 rounds in their respective careers and have 10 top-10 career finishes each.
Punpaka Phuntumabamrung, a native of Bangkok, Thailand, had a breakout fall in her sophomore season. Phuntumabamrung posted three top-10 finishes and a team-low 74.40 stroke average while competing in all five meets.
Phuntumabamrung's play along with solid performances from freshmen Sasikarn On-iam and Prima Thammaraks prove the Cyclones will continue to succeed after the graduation of Stefansen and Herman. On-iam had a 74.22 stroke average in three meets, and Thammaraks had two top-10 finishes, including a runner-up showing at the Windy City Collegiate. Junior Kristin Paulson also made significant contributions, playing in all 15 rounds and recording a 75.93 stroke average. Paulson recorded her first top-10 performance at the Lady Northern Invitational in the fall.
For the first time in Martens' career at Iowa State, the Cyclones have tremendous depth.
"It's exciting to see what the team can accomplish after the fall season," Martens added. "Everybody had a tournament where they played well and the competition in the lineup has been amazing, because you never know who is going to play well. Our players are always pushing each other and everyone feels they have to give it 100 percent on each shot because everyone else is doing the same."
Iowa State narrowly missed out on qualifying for the NCAA Championships last season and it is no secret what the team goals are for 2011.
