AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State women's golf team has achieved its highest ranking in school history after a historic second-place finish at the 18-team Lady Puerto Rico Classic on Tuesday.
The Cyclones are now ranked 16th in the nation according to Golfstat, the highest ranking of any team in the Big 12 Conference.
Iowa State's second-place showing in Puerto Rico was only five shots behind No. 1-ranked Alabama. The field consisted of eight teams ranked in the top-30.
Iowa State head coach Christie Martens, who led the Cyclones to their first NCAA Regional berth in 14 years last year, has arguably her deepest team, as five Cyclones finished in the top-20 in Puerto Rico. Five Cyclones are rated in the top-225 in the Golfstat individual rankings, led by sophomore Punpaka Phuntumabamrung, who is rated No. 153.
The Cyclones are back in action on Feb. 21-22 at the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla.
