AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State Cyclones swim and dive team is finally getting ready to compete in the much prepared for Big 12 Championship meet. The Cyclones will head to the Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas this Wednesday through Saturday.
The Cyclones are heading into the conference championships 5-5 in dual meets, and 0-3 in the conference. The team is very confident and preparations for this meet are at high levels.
"We have been in the taper process, so our yardage count has been down," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "We have also eliminated weights as well as our morning practices and are working on speed as well as race pace work."
Last year's competition brought many new personal bests including breaststroker Jeli Nixt finishing in the 200 breast with a school-record of 2:15.46. Dani Harris also placed third in Iowa State history for the 200 back with a time of 1:59.59 and became only the fourth Cyclone to go under the two minutes mark in the 200 distance. Sorenson is very optimistic that the team will accomplish more goals and set new records this year.
"Our goals for Big 12's are that each individual swimmer swim a season best time," said Sorenson. "If 75-80 percent of the team swims a lifetime best, than our team goals will be taken care of."
After swimming against Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri this season, the Cyclones are able to see how they compete against their league foes and what they need to work on to match up with their rivals.
"We are very optimistic and confident that we will achieve our team goals, our hard work and training since August will lead us to successes," Sorenson said.
The Iowa State diving team is also very excited and ready to compete at this high velocity meet.
"We are building up for this week, we don't want to be too excited right now, we are building up each day," diving coach Jeff Warrick stated.
This season has been very successful for many divers. Sarah Nelson, a top diver for the Cyclones is leading the team in both 1-meter and platform with scores of 272.70 and 245.90, respectively.
"We have been trying to simulate the conference championships and adapting to how the meet will go," Warrick said. "We always hope to see the best performance possible."
The meet will begin Wednesday at 6 p.m. CST with prelims picking up at 10 a.m. CST the following day.
