AUSTIN, Texas – The Iowa State swimming and diving team earned one NCAA 'B' cut Wednesday evening on day one of the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships. After one day the Cyclones sit in sixth place with 52 team points. Texas and Texas A&M sit tied atop the leaderboard with 74 points each.
In the first event of evening, the 200 medley relay team of Dani Harris, Jeli Nixt, Sarah Norris and Kalyn Amundsen finished sixth in a time of 1:42.35. The time was an NCAA 'B' cut time and the third-fastest in school history in the event.
“I thought our 200 medley relay team did fantastic,” Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said. “For those four to go 1:42, our third-fastest time ever, I am very pleased with that.”
In the 800 free relay, the team of Jenny Vondenkamp, Alex Gustafson, Chelsea Tomek and Meredith Doran finished sixth in a time of 7:31.37. The time was the eighth-fastest in school history.
“We are disappointed with how they swam the race,” Sorenson noted. “They all went out fast and did not come home. They did not swim a start race, four-for-four. They just need to relax more and come back tomorrow stronger.”
The Cyclones resume action tomorrow with preliminary swimming events beginning at 10 a.m., 1-meter diving beginning at 1 p.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m. Both sessions will be streamed live on big12sports.com and live stats will be available for both sessions as well.
All times are central standard time.
