RESULTSAUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State sophomore
Dani Harris put up an NCAA 'B' cut in the 100 back on day three of the Big 12 Championships. Iowa State sits in sixth with 109 points. Texas A&M sits in front with 635 points.
Harris put down a time that will be considered for the NCAA Championships in the prelims of the 100 back, going 54.81. The time put her in the 'B' final and ranked second in Iowa State history. In the finals, Harris went just a bit slower in 54.82, but finished fifth in the heat to be 13th overall.
“She did a really nice job racing on the day,” Iowa State head coach
Duane Sorenson said. “She wanted to go a little faster but only being one one-hundreath off is something we will take. She has a small adjustment she needs to make and next year she will be looking at 53 seconds.”
The 100 breaststroke is usually among Iowa State's stronger races and this season the Cyclones saw three swimmers contribute to the cause. The trio of
Jeli Nixt,
Emily Wiltsie and
Lindsey Frodyma finished in 11th (1:03.13), 14th (1:03.62) and 16th (1:04.70), respectively.
“Emily and Lindsey both swam to lifetime-best times today,” Sorenson noted. “This is the first time Lindsey placed in the 100 breast in a couple of years so that was good for her. Jeli swam her heart out, she did the best that she possibly could. She split a 1:02 in the relay early today and went 1:03.11 here. That is nothing to be ashamed of from where she was to where she is now.”
Wiltsie also contributed to the Iowa State cause in the 400 IM by finishing in 16th place. Her time of 4:29.37 in finals now ranks sixth in school history.
“It was her best time in the 400 IM in the morning and then she went a second and a half faster at night,” Sorenson stated. “She was a little tired in the 100 breast 'B' final but she was not far off there from her best time."
In the diving well it was
Sarah Nelson leading the Cyclones again, finishing 14th in the 1-meter competition with a score of 242.55. On Thursday, Nelson was also Iowa State's leading scorer on 3-meter.
“She did really well,” diving coach
Jeff Warrick said. “There were some dives that had questionable takeoffs but she was finishing dives really well.”
Abby Christensen posted her first team points of her Big 12 Championships, finishing 16th with a score of 228.60.
“Abby's scoring points for us,” Warrick noted. “She could have been a little sharper but she was going for it. I was happy with how she finished."
Justine Anders posted an exhibition score of 230.15. If the senior would have been scored for the event, she would have placed 15th.
“Justine's performance was great,” Warrick stated. “That blew away her best performance at this meet by a lot. She would have scored points if she was not an exhibition diver so that was outstanding.”
The Cyclones resume action tomorrow with preliminary swimming events beginning at 10 a.m. CST, platform diving beginning at 12:15 p.m. and diving finals begin at 5 p.m. 1650 freestyle heats begin at 5 p.m. while the rest of the swimming finals begin at 6 p.m. The prelims session will be streamed live on big12sports.com and live stats will be available for both sessions as well.
