AUSTIN, Texas- The Iowa State Cyclones wrapped up the NCAA Zone “D” Diving Championship Sunday, competing in the extremely challenging and elite platform event.
“Just looking back at the results and Iowa State's history, we did pretty well at the zone meet,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “We just need to work on our top scores and keep getting better so we will improve at next year's meet.”
Sunday marked the end of Abby Christensen's diving career at Iowa State. Christensen finished 20th overall in platform with a final score of 187.35. The senior also finished 31st on 3-meter with a score of 234.85 and 40th with a score of 206.45 on the1-meter board throughout the weekend.
“Abby dove really well and improved her score from last year,” Warrick said. “She finished strong despite experiencing some pain; she finished the meet strong. It's just really hard to believe that her career is over.”
Junior Sarah Nelson once again started off prelims strongly, diving consistently. Although her dives were not strong enough against the elite competition to advance to finals, Nelson finished the day in 16th overall with a final 5- dive score of 213.60.
Jenn Botch started out today's meet strong as well, finishing the first round of the day scoring 42.00 on her Forward 2 ½ somersault tuck.
“Overall I feel that the meet went well, especially for Sarah and Jenn. They got to experience their first Zone meet,” Warrick said. “Now they will know what to expect and what the meets are like so that next year they will be able to focus more on their dives.”
