Cyclones Kick Off Missouri Relays With Strong Performances

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The sprinters led the way for the Iowa State track and field team on the first day of the Missouri Relays inside Audrey J. Walton Stadium Friday. The Cyclones had four athletes qualify for the finals in their respective events, while Ian Warner earned a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.09).

After making his outdoor debut March 25 at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, Isaac Chelimo took the title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Cyclone freshman crossed the finish line nearly three seconds before runner-up Steven Busch of Drury, winning in 9:31.27.

Stephen Saylor also captured a distance title for the Cyclones, taking first in the 5,000-meter run in 14:55.90. Teammate Dan Murray wasn't far behind, finishing third in a personal-best time 15:03.45.

Freshman Jenny Dillon took sixth in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles, earning a spot in the finals Saturday at 12:45 p.m. CDT.

On the men's side in the prelims, junior Clint Martin won the 100-meter dash preliminaries and will compete in the finals Saturday at 2 p.m. CDT. Ryan Sander and Jamal Currica both qualified for Saturday's 110-meter hurdle finals after finishing fourth and fifth, respectively in the preliminary heat.

The throws group was led by junior Dan Newhouse as he earned the runner-up position in the javelin throw (204-0).

A runner-up finish was also earned by distance runner Marley Crusch in the 5,000-meter run. Crusch posted a personal-best time of 18:09.58, finishing only behind UMKC's Sara Meiners.

The Missouri Relays continues Saturday, with collegiate events scheduled for an 11 a.m. start. Live results are available. Results will be posted on cyclones.com at the conclusion of the meet.
