COLUMBIA, Mo. - The 15th-ranked Iowa State women's golf team made a major statement in the second round of the Big 12 Championships this afternoon at the The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo. Iowa State fired a second-round-low 285, the fourth-best 18-hole score in school history and the best ever in a conference tournament, to move up to second-place heading into the final round tomorrow.
Iowa State is at 585, only two shots behind second-round leader Texas (583), who along with Iowa State was the only other team in the field to go under par this afternoon. The Cyclones are three shots ahead of third-place Texas A&M (588).
Another balanced attack propelled the Cyclones back into contention. All five Cyclones shot 73 or lower this afternoon, led by freshman Prima Thammaraks' 3-under par 69. Texas' Madison Pressel has a comfortable six-shot lead in the medalist race (137).
Senior Victoria Stefansen and sophomore Punpaka Phuntumabamrung currently sit in a tie for 15th at 147 to aid the Cyclone effort. Phuntumabamrung fired a 1-under par 71 this afternoon. Sasikarn On-iam (148) is tied for 19th and Laurence Herman (150) is tied for 28th.
