AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State women's golf team didn't have to cross their fingers this time around. Behind a record-setting season, the 15th-ranked Cyclones were easily selected as one of 72 teams for NCAA postseason play, announced today via a teleconference call by the NCAA selection committee.
Iowa State will compete at the NCAA West Regional, held May 5-7 at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash. It marks the second year in a row and the sixth time in school history (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2010, 2011) the Cyclones were picked for NCAA Regional competition. The top eight teams in the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 18-21 at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
Iowa State has produced arguably its greatest season in school history, achieving its highest ranking ever (No. 15), capturing three tournament titles and recording 11 of the top 12 18-hole team scores in the program's history. The Cyclones are fresh off a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships, equaling their best showing ever at the Big 12 meet.
The Cyclones ended a 14-year drought of NCAA postseason play last year, placing 10th at the NCAA West Regional in Palo Alto, Calif., just five strokes shy from the final qualifying score to the NCAA Championships.
