IRVING, Texas - Iowa State head women's golf coach Christie Martens was honored today by the Big 12 Conference, earning Big 12 Coach of the Year honors by a vote of the league's coaches. The Big 12 also honored a trio of Cyclone golfers in its annual All-Big 12 Team. Senior Laurence Herman and freshmen Sasikarn On-iam and Prima Thammaraks were among 10 golfers to earn All-Big 12 status.
Martens, who is now in her seventh season with the Cyclones, has molded Iowa State into a national golfing power, as the Cyclones achieved their highest ranking in school history (No. 15) during the 2010-11 campaign. Iowa State is currently rated No. 19 by Golfstat and No. 20 by Golfweek in the national rankings.
"This honor affirms the remarkable job Christie has done with the women's golf program at Iowa State," said Iowa State Senior Associate Athletics Director Calli Sanders. "She continues to elevate our program to new heights and we are proud that her work has been recognized with this tremendous honor."
Iowa State has finished first or second in six tournaments, including capturing three tournament titles in its record-setting season. Five of the top-six 54-hole team scores and 11 of the top-12 18-hole team scores in school history have been achieved by the 2010-11 Cyclones.
Martens' squad finished fourth at the Big 12 Championships last week after earning the top seed in the event for the first time in school history. Senior Victoria Stefansen tied for fourth at the Big 12 meet, the highest ever finish by a Cyclone at the Big 12 Championship. Three Cyclones have earned all-tournament honors at the Big 12 Championships in the last two years under Martens.
Herman, who hails from Kortrijk, Belgium, is tied for the team lead with five top-10 performances this season and is second on the team with a 74.60 stroke average. On-iam, a rookie from Bangkok, Thailand, is on pace to break the school's single-season stroke average mark. She currently has a 74.21 stroke average and has finished 23rd or better in all eight tournaments she has competed in. Thammaraks, a native of Bangkok, Thailand, has a 74.93 stroke average and two runner-up medalist finishes in her rookie campaign.
The Cyclones were selected to their second-straight NCAA Regional on Monday and will compete at the NCAA West Regional, May 5-7 in Auburn, Wash.
