NORMAN, Okla.-Iowa State's
Dani Stack and
Betsy Saina went 2-4 respectively in the 10,000 meters and Josh Koglin placed second in the hammer throw at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday at the John Jacobs Track Complex. The Iowa State women are third with 21 points. Nebraska leads the women's team scoring with 29 points. The Iowa State men will enter the second day of the championships tied for seventh-place with eight points. Oklahoma leads the men's team standings with 29 points.
Stack and Saina paced the first 7,000-meters of the 10,000-meter final. Oklahoma's Jessica Engel made her move to the front of the pack with 500 meters to go. With a strong performance, Stack took home second-place, finishing the 10K in 33:48.63.
"We had decided ahead of time that no matter what happened, we would make the rest of the field work hard in the final 3,000 meters," Stack said. "At the conference meet, place is everything. The time is not important."
Saina ran to a fourth-place finish, clocking a 34:12.92. The duo earned 13 points towards the Iowa State women's team score.
On the last throw of the final round, Koglin threw a personal best 197-02, earning him the runner-up position. The mark is also good enough for third-place on the Iowa State outdoor track all-time performer list.
"(Josh) finally got past the 60-meter mark," Iowa State assistance coach
Grant Wall said. "I'm thrilled with the place and to do it on his last throw was a real statement."
