EUGENE, Ore. – The Iowa State track and field team posted an impressive first day in the NCAA West Regional Preliminary Rounds Thursday, qualifying four athletes for Friday's quarterfinal races and two Cyclones for the NCAA Championships June 8-11 in Des Moines.
In the last women's event of the evening, the Cyclone duo of
Dani Stack and
Betsy Saina impressed a crowded Hayward Field as they finished 2-3 in the national semi-final of the 10,000-meter run. Stack and Saina automatically advanced to the 10,000-meter final at the NCAA Championships.
Kianna Elahi kicked off the day on a positive note for the Cyclones, winning her heat in the first round of the 400-meter hurdles. Elahi won the second of six first-round heats with a time of 57.73, automatically qualifying for the quarterfinals Friday at 7:20 p.m. CDT. Elahi will compete alongside Iowa State teammate
Donnise Powell, qualifying for the quarterfinals after finishing fourth in heat five in 1:00.22.
Freshman
Edward Kemboi made two impressive moves in the last 110 meters to move from fifth to first, winning the sixth and final heat of the 800-meter preliminary in 1:50.76. Kemboi's win automatically qualifies for the quarterfinal Friday at 7:05 p.m. CDT.
In his first appearance at the regional meet, junior
Ian Warner ran to a personal best, 10.44 in the first round of the 100-meter dash. Warner finished 13th in the first round, automatically qualifying for the quarterfinal round Friday at 6:35 p.m. CDT.
Action at the NCAA West Regional resumes Friday at noon CDT with the first round of the women's hammer throw.
