AMES, Iowa - The 19th-ranked Iowa State women's golf team will compete in its second-straight NCAA West Regional, held May 5-7 at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash.
The Cyclones, who earned the seventh-seed in the 24-team field, will try to become the first team in school history to advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 18-21 at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
The top eight teams in all three regionals will comprise the 24 squads to compete at the NCAA Championships. Iowa State has qualified for regional play six times (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2010, 2011) in school history, but has never made it to the national meet. The Cyclones posted their best showing ever at a regional last season, placing 10th at the NCAA West Regional, five strokes shy of the final qualifying spot.
"We strive to be an NCAA tournament team every year and I have been proud of how well our team has played this year," Iowa State head coach Christie Martens said. "We want to make history here at Iowa State and we want to make the next step and play in the NCAA Championships."
The five Cyclones making the trip to Seattle are Victoria Stefansen (senior, Roervig, Denmark), Laurence Herman (senior, Kortrijkim, Belgium), Punpaka Phuntumabamrung (sophomore, Bangkok, Thailand), Prima Thammaraks (freshman, Bangkok, Thailand) and Sasikarn On-iam (freshman, Bangkok, Thailand).
Iowa State has shattered virtually every school record during the 2010-11 campaign, winning three tournament titles and recording 11 of the top 12 18-hole tournament scores in school history.
Iowa State's depth is off the charts. All five Cyclones are averaging 75.06 strokes per round or better, are rated in the top-150 in the Golfstat individual national rankings and have a combined 20 top-10 finishes.
