FT. MYERS, Fla. - Iowa State tennis captured six wins on the second day of duals at the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational today. Two doubles pairs advance to the final round of duals, and Marie-Christine Chartier will compete for her bracket's top spot.
Chartier will fight for the title in her flight after defeating North Florida's Melanie Aguire 6-1, 6-1 today. Her opponent in the championship match will be Montse Fernandez of Wichita State.
"Marie just needs to keep doing what she has been doing," Iowa State head coach Armando Espinosa said. "Today she played very smart. She played a very good player, and Marie had a very specific game plan that she followed and it worked out great."
Two Cyclone pairs will represent Iowa State in the doubles championships tomorrow. Maria Macedo and Ksenia Pronina defeated Anna Barnstein and Gabriela Meja of Miami today, 8-6, while Jenna Langhorst and Meghan Cassens overtook Fernandez and Delia Damaschin of Wichita State, 8-4.
"They fought a lot," Espinosa said of the doubles pairs. "We kept being aggressive and we used the fundamentals in doubles. As long as we keep doing that, we're going to surprise some good teams."
Pronina and Tessa Lang topped their opponents from Florida Gulf Coast University today. Pronina and Lang enjoyed their first singles wins of the tournament, and Pronina will play for seventh place while Lang will battle for fifth place in their respective brackets.
Simona Cacciuttolo, Cassens, Emma Waites and Jenna Langhorst fell as individuals today, and the four Iowa State student-athletes will compete for third-place honors on Monday.
