AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State divers begin their 2012 competition Tuesday with the Georgia Diving Invitational. The three-day meet features prelims each day at 10 a.m. CST.
The invitational features some of the top teams from the southeast as the Cyclones will see the likes of Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, LSU, Penn State, Southern Methodist and Virginia.
“This is going to be a great experience for us and hopefully this great competition we face will help make us better,” diving coach
Jeff Warrick said. “We saw some really good diving at the TYR Invitational but this is going to be better. I expect our team will rise to the challenge and have some really good performances. Either way it is going to be good for the Big 12 Championships, the Zone Diving meet and hopefully the NCAA Championships.”
Senior
Sarah Nelson is the hot diver for the Cyclones at the moment, posting career-high scores on 1-meter (275.32) and 3-meter (290.93) against Iowa on Dec. 9. The effort earned Nelson Big 12 Diver of the Week honors, the second time she has earned the distinction.
“Coming off of the Iowa meet, she is at a higher point than she has ever been at,” Warrick noted. “We need to keep improving for the end of the season to get a shot at the NCAA meet. It comes down to a couple of dives for her that have been inconsistent. In a six-dive contest you have to hit all six.”
Jessica Henderson has been as good as Nelson this year for Iowa State. The sophomore is second on the team on 1-meter at 272.09 and leads the Cyclones on 3-meter with a 291.15. Henderson is also second on platform with a 193.60. Henderson has improved a great deal during the 2011-12 campaign and Warrick has noticed.
“Jessica's hard work ethic and drive has impressed me the most,” Warrick stated. “That is what has paid off for her. She is really strong and athletic and that carries over to the pool. All of her dives are at a point better than they have ever been before but it comes down to consistency. That is part of our sport, and getting a lot of reps in to improve a diver's consistency.”
The Cyclone divers have been boosted by the return of senior
Jenn Botsch. In her first full meet of the season, Botsch posted respectable scores on both springboards and Warrick expects her to continue the process of becoming a valuable member of the Cyclones.
“It is great to have Jenn back,” Warrick said. “She had a rough start to the fall. On 1-meter she is close to her best, we changed some dives around to help make her more consistent. She has not got all of her dives back yet on 3-meter. Jenn is a senior and has a lot of experience and I am hoping she can score at the Big 12 meet for us.”
The Iowa State trio of
Marley Dobyns,
Megan Cohea and
Dani Davis have all continued to improve throughout the season. Dobyns post her career-high score on 1-meter against Iowa, Cohea is looking to be a contributor on platform and Davis posted career-best scores on both springboards against the Hawkeyes.
“Marley's scores at the Iowa meet reflected her improvement,” Warrick stated. “She needs to keep diving at that level and she is really going to help us. Dani and Megan have come a long way in a short amount of time, and they have to keep improving. They have a great work ethic and get after it every day.”
