AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State swimming and diving team (0-1, 0-0, Big 12) plays host to South Dakota State (0-0, 0-0, The Summit League) at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Beyer Hall Pool. The meet is the Cyclones' first home dual meet of the season. Admission is free.
Iowa State is looking for fast competition and times against the Jackrabbits, who will be coming off a meet against Northern Iowa Friday.
"They have a number of very good individuals," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "If they come in and they are on and we are off, it will be a very close meet."
The Cyclones will see some great competition in the distance and freestyle events, as well as a challenge in the breaststroke events.
Against Minnesota, the Cyclones saw success in the 50-freestyle event, when Amanda Paulson earned a first-place finish with a time of 23.83. Paulson also took second in the 100-backstroke with a time of 52.97 with fellow Cyclone Katie Vollhaber taking third with a time of 53.07.
Since the meet against Minnesota the Cyclones have been working hard in practice to continue to improve on their times as well as technique.
"Practice has involved more intensity work," Sorenson said. "We've found some areas of weakness and the women have really taken it to heart and have tried to improve overall as a team. Each individual also has something we are asking them to work on and they are doing a great job with that."
In the diving well, the Cyclones are looking to continue the success they saw against Minnesota.
Freshman Elyse Brouillette recorded the first Cyclone NCAA Zone Diving Qualifying score of the season. Brouillette finished on the 3-meter board with a score of 289.50.
Against South Dakota State, the Iowa State divers will see the same great competition and intensity as the Cyclone swimmers.
"They have a new diving coach from the University of Tennessee, where he was an assistant coach," diving coach Jeff Warrick said. "He has a really great background so I know that they are getting some really great coaching."
Warrick stated that his divers have been working on being mentally prepared for meets.
"I think that we did a really great job against Minnesota, a team that had two divers who were NCAA champions last year," Warrick said. "The women didn't really cave into that and did really well. They are really working as a whole team to be prepared and just do what they know they have been trained to do."
