AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State swimming and diving team (1-1, 0-0 Big 12) defeated South Dakota State (1-1, 0-0 The Summit League) Saturday afternoon, 184-102, taking wins in 14 of the meet's 16 events.

“I was very pleased with our times,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “It was a challenging week of training and they still stepped up and swam fast today. From top to bottom the team did really well and this sets us up for great competition against South Dakota and Nebraska next weekend.”

The Cyclones started out the afternoon with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay event; the team of Bre Loeschke, Imelda Wistey, Kaylee Kucera and Sarah Deis finishing with a time of 1:46.66.

Iowa State swept the 200 freestyle event, with a first-place finish and time of 1:56.32 from Deis. In second, with a time of 1:57.00 was Katie Vollhaber and Alex Gustafson took third with a time of 1:58.68.

In the 100 backstroke, the Cyclones saw top-three finishes with Loeschke taking first in a time of 57.88. Sarah Norris finished with a time of 58.51 and Dani Harris clocked in at 58.80. All three times are season-bests.

Loeschke saw her second victory of the afternoon with a first place finish in the 200 backstroke event, clocking in with a time of 2:06.77.

“I think Bre did a really great job in both her 100 and 200 back,” said Sorenson.

Wistey also clocked in a season-best time with a first-place finish of 1:04.22. in the 100 breaststroke. Also for the Cyclones, Marley Suckow finished in second with a time of 1:06.74 and Ali Stearns took third with a time of 1:07.52.

“It was a really nice swim for Imelda in her 100 breaststroke,” Sorenson said “It was probably one of her best times ever.”

Senior Tiana Wollin finished first in the 200 butterfly event with a time of 2:08.23, another season-best. In second, sophomore Kristy Kunkel finished with a time of 2:11.04.

In the 50 freestyle, Amanda Paulson took first with a time of 23.71. In second for the Cyclones was Kucera with a time of 24.74.

Suckow took first for the Cyclones in the 200 breaststroke with a season-fast time of 2:22.32.

“I think this is the first time Marley has beaten Emily and those girls are best friends and great training partners so its great to see all her hard work paying off,” Sorenson said. “ I know it's going to motivate Emily to swim faster as well. ”

The Cyclones continued with their first place-finishes in the 500 freestyle event as Elizabeth Kleiner finished with a time of 5:10.90

Paulson earned a second first-place victory in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.01.

In the diving well, the Cyclones again took top-three finishes on the 1-meter springboard. Finishing first for the Cyclones was freshman Elyse Brouillette with a final score of 267.15. In second was junior Jessica Henderson with a score of 246.45 and senior Marley Dobyns took third with a score of 223.58.

“I thought we did really well on 1-meter,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “I think they started off the meet right and were really strong there.”

On the 3-meter board, Henderson took first with a score of 253.73.

“ 3-meter we didn't really do as well as I hoped,” Warrick said. “We will evaluate that and figure out what we did there. Besides just scoring-wise though, I was looking for certain things we've been working on in practice, and individually each person did something really well.”

The Cyclones will be back in the pool Friday, Oct. 26, when they host South Dakota and Nebraska in a double dual meet. The meet will be held at Beyer Pool and is slated to begin at 5 p.m. CST.
