AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State swimming and diving team will be back in action for its first double-dual meet of the season. The Cyclones (1-1, 0-0 Big 12) will face the University of South Dakota (0-1, 0-0 Summit League) and Nebraska (4-0, 0-0 Big Ten) Friday at Beyer Pool. Admission is free.
The Cyclones are coming off an exciting meet against South Dakota State where the team took wins in 14 of the meet's 16 events. The team saw many season-best times and improvements in technique which they have been working on throughout the season.
“We will be swimming two heats instead of just one heat this weekend,” head coach
Duane Sorenson said. “We are not practicing any differently for this meet and are continuing to try and improve on our mistakes and improve our times from last weekend.”
Friday's double dual meet will provide the Cyclones an opportunity to swim against teams with great depth and have a big meet feel.
“It's going to be a very interesting meet,” Sorenson said. “Nebraska has some very outstanding freestylers and we will match up much better in the stroke events. So the question is, can our depth keep up with their outstanding freestylers and can our stroke people get ahead of their stroke people and counter balance their freestylers?”
For the Cyclones, sophomore
Bre Loeschke put up two first-place victories in both the 100 and 200 backstroke events against South Dakota State. In the 100 backstroke, Loeschke clocked in with a time of 57.88. In the 200 backstroke, she touched the wall at 2:06.77. Both times are season bests for Loeschke.
Also earning two first-place victories and season-best times was
Amanda Paulson who finished first in both the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. In the 50 freestyle Paulson touched the wall at 23.71 and in the 100 butterfly she finished with a time of 59.01.
The Cornhuskers defeated Nebraska-Omaha last weekend in a two-day meet. During the first day of the meet, Nebraska won nine out of the 11 individual events and both relays. On day two, the squad won all 13 events.
For Nebraska, juniors Shannon Guy and Bailey Pons led the team with two event wins each. Guy took first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.82 and the 100 butterfly clocking in with a time of 57.57. Pons finished first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:01.96 and 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17.22.10.
The Coyotes lost their first dual of the season against North Dakota last Friday, but put up many fast times that will challenge the Cyclones.
“It's early in the season for both teams,” Sorenson said. “So both teams are experimenting with their line ups so it's going to be quite interesting to see who swims what and who will surprise whom.”
Playing a significant role on the boards for the Cornhuskers will be junior Payton Michaud. The junior had first-place finishes on both the 1-meter and 3-meter against Nebraska-Omaha, scoring 289.57 and 310.65 respectively.
South Dakota defeated North Dakota in the diving well, with two divers placing first and second on both 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Megan Chmielewski won the 3-meter with a score of 230.26 and Megan Schutt took second with a final score of 171.65. On the 1-meter Schutt took first with a score of 216.15 and Chmielewski was second with a score of 215.15.
