AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State Cyclones (2-2, 0-0 Big 12) had six event wins of its double-dual meet with Nebraska (6-0, 0-0 Big Ten) and South Dakota (0-3, 0-0 Summit League) Friday at Beyer Pool. The Cyclones defeated South Dakota, 246-53, while falling to Nebraska, 122.5-176.50.
“I thought the women really raced well today,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “We had a lot of best-times and we swam a lot faster than we did against South Dakota State and Minnesota.”
Leading the Cyclones for the evening was Imelda Wistey. The junior saw two first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events and a second-place finish in the 200 IM. Earning the Cyclones first victory of the evening, Wistey touched the wall with a time of 1:04.07 in the 100 breaststroke. In the 200 breaststroke she finished with a time of 2:22.6. She also touched the wall with a time of 2:08.71 in the 200 IM.
“I was really proud of our 200 stroke people and our IM people, they all swam outstanding,” Sorenson said. “Imelda winning two races, it was awesome.”
Senior Marley Suckow and junior Emily Wiltsie also contributed to the Cyclones 200 breaststroke victory. Suckow took second-place with a time of 2:22.99 and Wiltsie took third with a time of 2:23.16.
Bre Loeschke continued to show success in the backstroke events. The sophomore finished first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:04.97. In the 100 backstroke, Loeschke clocked in with a second-place time of 58.18.
“It was great to see Bre come back from a disappointing 100 backstroke to win the 200 back,” Sorenson said.
Freshman Marissa Engel saw a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke with a season-best time of 2:05.27.
The Cyclones saw success again in the 200 butterfly with sophomore Elizabeth Kleiner finishing first with a time of 2:06.57. Also scoring for the Cyclones was sophomore Kristy Kunkel, taking third with a score of 2:09.38.
Amanda Paulson swam an entertaining 50 freestyle, tying for a first-place finish with Nebraska's Taryn Collura. The women touched the wall with a time of 23.56.
The Cyclones started off the meet with an exciting 200 medley relay with the team of Sarah Norris, Wistey, Kaylee Kucera and Paulson swimming another neck-and-neck race with Nebraska. The Cyclones finished in second-place with a time of 1:44.90.,and the team of Loeschke, Ali Stearns, Kleiner and Vollhaber took third with a time of 1:48.27.
Sophomore Sarah Dies finished first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.10, leading the Cyclones in the event for the season. Deis also took third, with a time of 1:55.17, in the 100 freestyle event.
“Sarah did a great job in the 200 IM,” Sorenson noted.
The Cyclones finished the evening with a third-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Kucera, Samantha Fossum, Bri Carlberg and Alex Gustafson finished with a time of 3:33.43.
“We need to work a little bit more on our distance freestyle and our sprint freestyle because we didn't score as many points there, but overall it was a really great meet,” Sorenson said. “It was your typical Iowa State and Nebraska meet, fast times and close races.”
In the diving well, Elyse Brouillette continued to show promise as she led the Cyclones on the 1-meter springboard with a second-place finish and season-best score of 277.85. Jessica Henderson took a fourth-place finish with a season-best score of 268.60.
“Today we dove well on the 1-meter board,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “We came out strong against Nebraska, which is a really deep team with great competitors. I thought Elyse and Jessica both did really well, making the zone cut score so that was exciting to see.”
On the 3-meter board, Brouillette and Henderson again led the Cyclones, placing fifth and sixth, respectively. Brouillette finished with a score of 279.65 and Henderson had a final score of 256.75.
“The women need to continue to dive the same on the 3-meter board,” Warrick said. “We had a little bit rougher day on 3-meter but not a terrible day, we just have to keep improving.”
The Cyclone swimmers will next travel to compete in the Kansas Invitational Nov. 16-18 in Topeka, Kan.
